Event: The Pit

The Pit
On night 329, you have a dream. This may or may not be unusual for you. You dream of falling--a common sort of dream. You fall and fall into darkness toward something that never gets any closer.

When you wake up, you're in a room. You're not alone, though: there are many others with you. You might know them, you might not, but all of you had the same dream. No one knows how you all got here from your various scattered positions around Norfinbury, but here you are. The room is white, probably: the uniformly dim lighting makes it hard to distinguish colors, but it's certainly the same color no matter where you look. You have your supplies with you, thankfully, because there's no other source of food or water. There's plenty of company, which may be a welcome change or an unwelcome crowd. There's a hole.

It's in the center of the room, and if you could measure it, you would find it perfectly, impossibly circular. It starts out approximately the diameter of an average-sized adult man's shoulder width, but every fifteen minutes it gets a little larger, which may be difficult to notice until it's grown quite a bit. Don't worry, the room widens by the same amount on the same schedule. Looking into it reveals the pitch blackness of a great depth and the barely there grin of something looking up at you, teeth glittering in the way diamonds don't.

The longer you're here, the wider the pit grows, the more you want to throw yourself down it. You think you might learn something. Maybe you will.

--

This is an optional event. Characters who participate will dream of falling and wake up in the aforementioned room, while those who don't participate will neither have the dream nor wake up in the room. Characters in the room will have disappeared from Norfinbury and cannot interact with anyone not in the event for the duration (one IC day, three OOC days). They will have their tablets with them, but they will not turn on. Anyone outside attempting to contact someone via tablet will have the message go through fine, but the character in the room won't be able to see it until after, given the tablet is off.

As mentioned, those who are in the room will have to deal with the pit, which increases in diameter by two inches every fifteen minutes--the room increases as well, so the proportion of room to hole is always the same. The longer the characters are in the room, the more they will feel the urge to jump into the pit. At first it's like an intrusive thought, the sort of "no, that's ridiculous" whisper anyone might have looking out over a great height, but the desire grows stronger and stronger as time passes. There's the undeniable feeling that there's something to be gained by jumping down, though if that's true or not is yet to be seen. Anyone who does jump down will vanish into darkness, not returning until the end of the event.

Your character's actions will impact the next event. If your character jumps, please let us know by replying to this comment. If your character trips or is pushed in, let us know, too, but please specify that they tripped or pushed, and if pushed, let us know who did it!

The log for this event can be found here.

1. Branching off of this, what happens if an object is lowered into the Pit? House has some items he could tie together to send down the Pit. Would anything that descends past a certain point just disappear? Or would it all be able to be pulled back up so long as it's still being held at the top? John also has a tape measure. Would this extend to the fullest point without hitting anything?

2. What about people? If we make a human chain going down, will people be unable to get out after a certain point? Can they feel the walls of the Pit?

3. What about lights shone down into the pit? John has a pocket flashlight and House has a penlight. While the Pit is small, will the light penetrate any appreciable distance?

4. Do the walls/floor feel/taste/have a similar texture to the walls of the white rooms and maze the characters were in for Lavender's Green?

5. If someone does something like draw a line from the wall to the edge of the pit. When the room and pit expand, will the line change at all? Will the Pit swallow it up? Will the wall seem to expand away from the line?

6. In a similar vein, what if a character uses some implement to trace the edges of the room (where the floor and wall meet, where two walls meet)? Will these expand as the walls do?

House is paying very close attention to the corners once he gathers that they're pulling outward. Will he be able to see or feel any kind of seam/crevice? What if he uses his tongue? It's the most sensitive thing he has for feeling, okay?!

Are there other locations that a seam of some sort could be found?

Where the walls meet the floor?
Where the floor gives way to the pit?
Within reaching distance down the pit, at all?
