Event: There Will Come Black Rains; Part Two
BLACK RAINS | |||
| When the final SD card is inserted into the tablet, the rain stops. It begins to snow, and that snow muffles the various sounds of the town. It's quiet. On everyone's tablet, a video begins to play. It's the middle of a day in what must be late spring or early summer. The video is taken from far enough away that it provides a general view of Norfinbury, though it seems like a normal-looking town and isn't detailed enough to navigate by. There is clearly some sort of government building in the center of town, though--and no walls to be seen anywhere, not of snow or metal. It isn't entirely clear at first that there's something in the sky. This video must be in slow motion, as the little dot grows larger slowly enough that it's easy to miss at first. But it gets larger and larger and closer and closer to the town. It's clearly a missile. It won't be long before it strikes--if it doesn't hit the town hall directly on, it will at least get close enough for the distinction to be pointless. This probably doesn't surprise some of you. But as it explodes--thank goodness this video has no accompanying audio--there's a light that swallows it up. The town survives. It's the second one that cracks this shield. Impossible to see in the chaos of the first strike, it hits only an instant later. For not even one second, the protective light flickers. It's enough. The bomb strikes a point on the eastern half of town, and a cloud mushrooms up. It's impossible to see anything at all, then. But when the smoke clears, something else is clear, too: The town's eastern half is badly damaged, but the town survived this attack. More quietly, another video appears on the public record: Samantha is sitting at her desk by the window. The teacher is going over ancient history, and Samantha is clearly bored--it's obvious, because she's taking refuge in the eternal escape for bored students and staring out the window. It's just bad timing, that's all. When the first missile strikes, it happens so quickly that the others don't even have enough time to react except to begin to make startled shrieking noises and begin to wobble off their chairs. The second one strikes at almost the same time, and so--really, it's just bad luck that in that instant the not even a second where their protection stutters, Samantha is staring right at it. The fear and confusion of the other students is nothing compared to the throat-tearing scream from Samantha as the explosion burns her eyes blind. @ADMIN only says that Data has been retrieved and made available. Thank you for your cooperation. Both of these videos are in the public record and can be viewed at any time. |

The tablet assistant can be asked to describe a video and will do so accurately, if clinically. Think "there is a large explosion in the sky" and "many children are screaming".
